I am mildly panicking that I committed to doing this. Quilting seems very technical and labour intensive. What if I can’t do this?!? I’m definitely feeling overwhelmed and fearful about starting this project…… but what if I can do it? (Pep-talk time) Even if I don’t finish, I’m going to be so happy I tried. I love projects. I love challenges. I just need to take one step at a time (Phew! OK!)

Step number one in quilt making is cutting….. Well actually it’s step 3….. but there seems to be much debate on that. Really, the first step is deciding whether to pre-wash fabric or not. Some people say you should pre-wash, and others say don’t bother.

I decided to pre-wash because I was nervous about colours running in the wash after making the quilt. However, this meant that after washing my fabric I also had to iron it. It was already seeming overwhelming and I had barely begun.

HOWEVER, after washing and ironing I was finally able to cut! The process was made easier by the right tools: cutting mat, rotary blade, and multiple rulers and explicit instructions:

Cutting got easier with practice. After cutting out each square individually for several colours I eventually figured out how to fold my fabric so I could cut multiple squares at once. I’m hoping I was accurate, time will tell as I piece them together. Here is my beautiful future quilt in pieces:

Next week I will begin piecing them together in blocks, Stay tuned!
